The world's longest running production motorcycle has got a brand new
engine after after 55 years. Introduced in 1949, the Royal Enfield Bullet
has been manufactured in India from 1955 until the present day, with
production running at 25,000 models per year.
Although the new model is at first glance unchanged from the 1950's,
it has a brand new 500cc lean-burn engine (developed in Austria), 5-speed
gearbox (designed in the UK) and a front disc brake, among many new
features.
The new engine was designed and developed in conjunction with the powertrain
systems company AVL. It had to retain the traditional appearance , simplicity,
and sound of the British ‘single’ but with greater inherent
reliability and performance coupled with better fuel consumption and
the ability meet anticipated requirements for noise and emissions in
both Europe & the USA.
In 350cc form this engine has been in production in India since 1999;
the 500cc version has been developed during this time and has been successfully
tested in the UK over the past two years. During extensive testing (which
included giving pillion rides to an MP) UK distributors Watsonian-Squire
developed a performance upgrade kit.
Other new features include:
Modified frame with new front forks , mudguard and disc brake.
Gas filled rear dampers
Avon Super Venom and Roadrunner tyres.
Restyled panels ,indicators and tank badges
Fresh colour schemes
Higher gearing than previous 500cc models.
"Improved performance, handling ,ride comfort and reliability makes
this the easiest Bullet to own and signals another large step forward
for Royal Enfield.” Peter Rivers Fletcher of Watsonian-Squire.
